Happy new year to you and your family dear Pat. We met in March 2007 in Paris when you came to play at the New Morning. Hi Pat.
We met briefly at the World Guitar Congress in Baltimore and you handed me your card and an excerpt from the Nature of Guitar paper. You were also a panel member invited to speak about "Flow" or being in the zone.
Your words and presence made an indelible impression on me then, and I hope your influence continues to go out into the world for a very long time to come.
Happy New Year!

Hi Pat,
It's Geoff Reecer(guitarist w/airmen of note).
We met(for the second time) a few years ago when you performed with us as a guest artist in our Jazz Heritage series.
We were able to spend a little time together that week.
I appreciate your pointing me in the direction of the writings of Eckhart Tolle. By now, I've read all of his books more than once.
As a teenager, I was strongly attracted to not only the guitar, but to similar
writings by such authors as Krishnamurti, and later Ramana Maharshi, and Nisargadatta Maharaj. My interest in this kind of thinking(or non-thinking)was always connected to, and often verified by my experiences with music.
When I discovered your music, I intuitively felt a connection to what these authors were pointing to, and the energy, intelligence, and warmth that I heard in your music. Thank you!
I also wanted to let you know that I am currently reading a fascinating book that I thought might interest you, if you are not already aware of it.
It is called "My Stroke of Insight" By Dr.Jill Bolte Taylor.
It is a brain scientist describing, in incredibly fascinating detail, her own stroke as it happens, and the recovery process that followed.
On the morning of the stroke, she gradually lost functioning in her left hemisphere, yet remained conscious throughout. As it turns out, although obviously painful and traumatic, her experience was also blissful...liberating...
Thanks again,
-Geoff

You’ve obviously caught my attention, so I’ll say what I think is important. Although I’ve often mentioned my first teacher, (as a child) John Hall, my description of his influence was not as rewarding (via professional respect) as some would have liked it to be, in fact the same could have been said about some of the others who were upcoming in my pursuit at that time. That’s when I began to see the importance of studying the teacher more than what the teacher taught. From what I remember about John Hall, his intention was to help me to learn how to play the guitar, I guess so that I could find a place somewhere in the ranks of successful guitar instrumentalists in the music profession. In my weekly lessons their were scales, arpeggio’s, there were studies found in violin books, all of which I found disappointingly against my polarity. Oh but there were also, solo’s to be copied off of records, and that ‘s what I truly loved! Finally, (and most of all) there was my contact and interaction with a wonderful human being. That’s what I remember John Hall to be. One amongst a few others that I’ve been fortunate to meet throughout my life. As far as a “lack of respect” ............ ?

Yo! Pat,
After all these years you still give no respect to the man that held your fingers to the stings to make the chords. You and you dad would come to 1701 South Taylor street to get lessons from John Hall. From the get go he saw your talent. Always giving you the little extra, and encouraging you to practice more.
I know because I was there. It was always Pat this and Pat that. He saw and encouraged your talent very early on yet you never give him respect. When you were muddling through 'Bye, Bye, Blues', 'Caravan', and 'Guitar Boogy', I was in the outer room listening.
He was so proud of you and would be frustrated about your lack of practice. I also recall a time when he was telling his wife Veronica, he had to pass you on to someone who could teach you more. He did not regret it. He was so proud of you and would have wanted you to achieve all that you have and more.
I just think it is too bad a big man like yourself never gives a tip of the hat to the very little guy that helped you along the way.
John Hall, the man that held your fingers to the strings, and one, two and three and four, has been gone a long time.
But lets get the history right,Pat. A little respect. You just did not pick up the guitar and start playing. Your father and John Hall, and your sessions at 1701 South Taylor street, had as much to do with your success as your natural talent.
This is a public forum and if you would like to dispute my memory, go for it.
If you do not dispute my memory, why not set the record straight, with the facts.
All the Best
Joe, the little kid in the other room when you were leaving.

Dear Pat, I ordered the documentary "Unstrung" and watched it last night and must admit that this is a real gem within all jazz docus out there. No doubt about it. I just like the fact that it shows not only the super positive sites of you. It gives space to reflect former downsides and problems of a famous person. That is a fact that impressed me the most. You are a true master and your story is worth to be shared not only within the guitar and jazz universe. Love you man!

Hello Pat, Just had a chilled evening of jazz on my hi fi after a gruelling day at work. Listened to my favourite "the maker". Want you to know that from a non musician (everyone who signs the guest book seems to be au fait with deep musical theory) I love the words of Chip Stern in liner notes to the Maker album. "No one who loves the guitar can ignore the rainbow in you". I met you in Ronnie Scotts back in 2005 Pat and asked you to autograph my copy of this album. You not only did this but invited me down to the private bar in the interval along with Kirk Yano. Youll never know how much this meant as you chatted with me for 20 minutes or so. Not only are you one of the jazz greats but a guy who took the time out to hang out with a fan. Thank you Pat Ged Feerick

Hey Pat, just wanted to drop a line and wish you and Aya a seasons greeting and a early happy new year. Its been about two years since our last lesson and I am still studying your blueprints of the guitar. As one guest entry mentioned, the studies you were generous enough to share, are enough for a life time. I am grateful for have been lucky enough to meet and study with one of the great masters of music and hope to meet up again someday to continue my development on our amazing instrument. Thanks again, Ross Steiner

First, I must say Jason thank you so much. I'm touched by what you've shared. Again, my thanks. ................... Second, ....... Scott, your question does make sense. to respond, when first noticed, my concern with the I Ching was, (and still is) related to its graphic display as a valid "blueprint" containing every combination of the guitars 6 strings, (including silence). Most of all, the profundity of finding a section of the guitars architecture within "The Book of Changes" coming from ancient China was mystical to begin with. These perspectives have continued to also include the similarity of Augmented, (triangle) and Diminished, (square) with the outer visual image of The Pyramid. Music and its various components transcend singular applications and reveal systems that can be seen in much broader manifestations. Although the I Ching is profound in various ways it's also part of a larger universal system that includes all things as ONE. I think it's important to remember that Music, (as a universal language) can be used for universal coupling.

Hi Mr. Martino,
I studied jazz guitar for awhile at the University of Maryland College Park and was there for your seminar, which I thought was very interesting. Since then I have taken some time off from the program and playing in general, but I am reading the I Ching. One question I have is this: Do you ever refer to the book for counsel? Using the methods described? Or were you more concerned with relating the hexagrams to the guitar and seeing what knowledge the I ching could bring to the guitar, not necessarily concerned with consulting the book in your own affairs to gain a better understanding of unconscious thoughts? Hopefully the question makes some sense! Thanks..
Scott

Hi Pat.
The lessons you gave me are enough for a lifetime, not just because of the "nature of the guitar", but because of the fact that you personally took the time out of your schedule to sincerely help me.
Technique is one thing, a good person is another, but they don't equal each other. Thank you for being both, which is truly a constant inspiration to me.
I still want another lesson should you have the great patience and time, meanwhile I'll hope to catch you at Birdland in NYC.

pat ----i've just completed reviewing all of your viscisitudes of your life. needless to say that god wanted you around a while longer. yours is a life that should be emulated by many of the folks that are brilliant and don't know it, and yet give up---this is a waste. you did not, and i am absolutely so proud of your return from the abyss. so, thank god for giving you a return to life and for your parents that gave you the love and reason to pursue your logic and re- understanding of life through the love of the guitar as your angellic harp. i'm now 85 and been playing the guitar since i was 12 years old. i've met all of the greats , van epps, pass, etc.; i've the guitar also as an aside---one of my pupils was sal salvedor, then of springfield, mass---a town from which we offered such greats as joe morrelo, etc.my point in telling you this is that in my life time i've acquired a bs, and an mba degree and spent 40 years with the us government all while playing lots of gigs in dc, va, mass, etc, as i travelled about with my job. guess what, for the past 25 years of my retiring years all i've been doing was playing and still studying the guitar---------the point here is that your innate love of music[guitar] never leaves the spirit. sorry ive taken so much of your precioius time but your story truly touched my very being. god bless you and if our path ever cross we'll a a long chat.

Dear Pat, I want to thank and honor you for the many enlightenments you've given me along my musical journey. I am more of a "Rock and Blues" guitarist though with many jazz inflections within my playing. My first impressions of you were "Consciousness" and "We'll Be Together Again", at a very young age this musical osmosis engrained chromaticism within my playing. All that you stand for as a person and in philosophy is total class that I really look up to and continuously learn from, you're my "sensei". My wife "Junko" and I are planning a trip this new year to hopefully meet you and your wife, since my wife is also from Japan "Fukuoka". Until then Pat, Peace and Blessings be upon you and your family.

My husband and I took in your show 2 nights ago at Chris' Jazz Club and boy, were we entertained. We trained up to Philly from Northern Virginia for our first look at the historic city and wanted to take in some local jazz while we were there and we very excited to see that you would be appearing. The late show was spectacular. I had never listened to jazz organ before, but he ran the gammit of emotions from crazy happy to seriously attentive to his message. Your show was the highlight of our weekend trip; I will keep an eye open for your return to Chris'. Many warm thanks!

Dear Mr. Martino, I'm honored to have an opportunity to express my personal regards in your guest book...I have my own Pat Martino story ...the first time I saw you was in the Maurice J. Summerfield book, Jazz guitar, 25 years ago...at the time, I worked at a bakery in Rittenhouse Square on 18th street, and at lunchtime, I'd go to the park with my classical guitar and practice... there was a huge Italian kid that worked with me named Manny from South Philly...he told me about a man who lived on his block and stayed in the house all day, playing the guitar...a jazz guitarist who was once famous in the sixties/seventies...this was in 1983...he said he would take me to meet the guitarist one day after work, and I could ask to take lessons, but Manny left that job, and we lost contact...I joined the Navy that same year, and got stationed in Yokosuka, Japan the following year...while I was in Japan, I suddenly realized you were the jazz guitarist Manny was referring to...I should've connected the dots sooner...from then on, I collected all the Pat Martino CDs/articles/books I could find...I was living in New York by 1994, when "Interchange" was released, and studying with Peter Bernstein at the time...by the end of 1994, there was a buzz about you touring again...I finally got to see you on January 21, 1995 at the "Bottom Line"...I recall that cold night vividly... it was about 15 degrees outside, and the line wrapped around the corner...when you came on stage, there were so many people in that building, I'm certain they violated every fire code in the book...people talked, wondering what you would play, etc... all questions were answered...you were introduced, to applause, screams and whistles... then you counted off the band and from the first note, you owned the room, and the night was yours...the audience was eerily silent...it was surreal... I witnessed amazement on the faces of the people...happy for you...happy to be there...definitely a special moment...the next year, I saw you at the Iridium on a Sunday night in March, and finally got to meet you after the set...it was such an honor for me, and in those brief moments, talking with you, I felt a strong sense of your humanity, humility, compassion and wisdom...you gave me one of your cards, and I still have it to this day...I have many of your CDs/music books...El Hombre, Strings, Desperado, East, Buhaina, Consciousness, All Sides Now, The Maker, Joyous Lake, Starbright, Think Tank, etc... they're all my favorites... I hope that you write a book about your life/philosophy...your story is inspiring...I look forward to seeing the movie, "Martino Unstrung"...you climbed all the way back up to the top of the mountain... Mr. Pat Martino, you deserve all the success, appreciation, and recognition...you've influenced so many great jazz guitarists and musicians... you're the preeminent jazz guitarist of our time...your music transcends the instrument, and continues to evolve...you're an inspiration to me, and I consider you a mentor...I could'nt go to Chris's Cafe last night, but I really wanted to be there... hopefully, I'll see you at Birdland...be peaceful...joe canady

Hello,it's been a long time since I've visited the site..Things have changed, i looked to see the part where you use The Iching as a souce of fingerings.....you are an inspiration in my study of this instrument that came to me by accident, because i wanterd to accompany myself...i've come into some dicoveries from trying to absorbing the Creative Source video......i am conviced that the mindset that built the great Pyramids of Geeza is responsible for the guitar!or at least it's based on the same system..take into account the things in common; the numbers 3 and four!....the guitar as you know is based on the numbers 3 and 4 and is the only instrument that divivds the Chromatic Scale evenly with no remainder......these numbers not only pertain to the tuning of the guitar, but in the very basic structure of movment on the guitar;the interval.the distance between the first and last note of a Major interval is four half steps and a Minor half step is three......my connection with Eygpt is that the pyramids are also based on the numbers 3 and 4....with the base being square and the sides being triangular!...also astrologicly, the great pyamids also point to the three stars in the constellation Orion, known as the Three Kings...some astronomers beleive these stars(three) have a a relation ship with a another constellation called the cross (four)...i hope i get the chance to see yoy the next time you're inDC!..PEACE

Dear Pat,
About eight years ago I attended one of your gigs downstairs in a jazz club in London. It was a great performance. I have been one of your fans since I was a kid teaching myself guitar.
After your performance I mentioned to you that I was recovering from a spinal injury that had thoroughly debilitated my playing ability. I will always remember the knowing look you gave me when I told you this. I don't even remember exactly what you said. I just remembervthe mutual appreciation of the physical and mental struggle to recover.
Your music and life is an inspiration to me.

Line Games, Songbird, The Great Stream - Keystone Korner. Footprints, Sunny, How Insesitive - Berkeley Community Theatre w/ Bobby Rose. El Hombre, Four on Six, Heartstrings - Yoshi's. The Phineas Trane, Impressions - Birdland. Then and now the most intense performances for me. I hope you get back to the Bay Area for another.

A very good article (and test) about the Gibson Pat Martino guitar (and the concert in Munich) can be read in the new issue from grand guitars No. 06/2008 (www . grandguitars . de). Take a look - its really a very good guitar-magazin.

Dearest Cousin Andrea, ..... ‘Sorry I couldn’t get back to you any sooner, I’m departing for Japan early in the morning. There’s never enough time to get everything done! I will truly look forward not only to say hello, but also hopefully a hug, and a kiss, it seems like such a long time. Also tell your son that I’m really looking forward to meeting him at that time. For now I send all of you my Love!

Hi Cousin Pat, I am very sorry that we didn't get to hook up the last time that you played at Chris's Cafe. It just wasn't in the cards. However we are planning to see you this time on Friday Nov 28th. There will be a group of us coming. My son is especially looking forward to meet you. As I said before he is a guitarist and really enjoys listening to your music. We are trying to get AA (Angela) to come to. I hope that would be able to take some time out and stop over to say HI. Tell Aya we said HI.
God Bless
All my Love

Hello. I am a 29 year old guitarist studying in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. I am sort of taking a chance here really, but I am very interested in perhaps studying with you Mr. Martino. I would be willing to do whatever I had to in order to make that happen. I am very serious and willing to learn all that I can. This may not get a response, but I believe that if you want good things that you put it out there with the understanding it will happen and it will. If nothing else let me say that your life and your work has been a big influence and inspiration to me and I wish you the best. God bless.

Pat,
I listened to your CD "The Maker" again this morning on my way to work. I tell you Pat I think it is my favorite CD. Noshufuru is fascinating. I love the way it starts. The way you play with Ridl is amazing. I love the drummer. I've been a lover of Jazz guitar my whole life and have studied it a long time and I've got to tell you I find your playing particularly fascinating. I hope you make a trip to Southern California soon. I caught you a couple of years back at the Catalina Bar and Grill in LA with Joey. I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work and sharing. You have blessed me profoundly and you have greatly enriched the lives of thousands or others as well.

Hi Pat, what an inspiration you are to me! When I get down like I am now. I think about your story and life and it gives me courage. I am a drummer for 40 years, I am 62, and was born in new Jersey. I am currently in San Diego living on a fixed income, and in a low rent hotel. I have no Transportation and am unable to play my drums right now because of the living situation. But I am thankful I have a roof over my head, and I can listen to good music like "Stone Blue." As you know all to well, life's challenges can bring us some valuable lessons. I have had the good fortune though to have played with some excellent musicians, like Blue Mitchell, and Art Pepper.
I had some of your earlier stuff, but lost most of my material possessions. But I still have the I ching which I throw every day! (laughs) Also I write a blog with increasing readership, about my Native American / Taoist spiritual thoughts. If your interested drop me a line, for the web address. I was wondering about the "Joyous Lake" band and what cd you would recommend from around that time with the same players. I'm sure I couldn't go wrong with anything your on. I love Kenwood's playing by the way.

Dear Pat Martino:
Hello from Don Plue. Ill - health has prevented me from chasing after your performances, I'm sorry to say... as Everyone here KNOWS that every performance of yours is an EVENT. I must confess I play my Pat Martino Custom everyday ( even while sick ) because without that, I don't feel "centered". What a wonderful guitar from a truly ASTOUNDING musician and such an AMAZING PERSON. I wish you a very belated (sorry) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and I am looking forward to wishing you and yours much happiness in the oncoming future. Anyone who might read this SHOULD KNOW that the Pat Martino Custom is a guitar that is capable of any type of guitar genre. For those who might be wondering, my humble opinion is, don't bother purchasing that PRS, that Jackson, that Les Paul (whichever model Les Paul - no disrespect intended, as I own a PRS,Jackson and Les Paul )-- guitarists seek out that Pat Martino Custom-- this guitar can do it all, and then some, whatever genre you play!--However, this really should be no surprise, as it was designed by a MUSICAL GENIUS!
Mr.Pat Martino, Thank you so much for coming out to speak with my spouse at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis. She was amazed and surprised by your genuine warmth! I believe that perhaps we should refer to you as Sensei Pat Martino! God Bless You and Yours.
Thank You,
Don Plue

Hi Pat,
I was going to a Jazz school in Edmonton (Grant McEwan) in the mid 70's and at a party one summer weekend, a fellow student put on side 2 of Live! (1972). I was stunned - and I've been a huge fan ever since. My final performance jury at school, I performed "The Great Stream"...
It was thrilling to watch you perform that song at the Toronto Jazz festival (with Joey) about 5 or 6 years ago... it was like getting a shot of adrenaline when that head started...
Thanks Pat - for your inspiration and sharing your creative energy. It means a lot...

Dear Pat (and the great rhythm section !)
it was a few month ago when my wife asked me if there's any nice jazz festival in Swiizerlad , where we were suppose to go anyway.
i checked it and was happy to see that you have 5 days engagement in Bern Jazz Festival. i know most of your recordings but this set you made a tribute to Wes and it was so wonderful. you were still playing you're own but gave hints towards wes. the tunes you chose showed that you didn't want to play the well known tunes of montgomery.
i guess you won't rememeber me. but the 2nd thing that happened this eve was amazing for me: it was the 1st time ever that i asked my wife to take a photo of a jazz legend and myself. i've been in hundreds of jazz concerts and gigs and never wanted to do so...it was a very special moment that i can't explain.
we spoke alittle bit about Israel and the jazz department i teach in and i still wish to make connection between your agent and israeli producer cause you have many jazz fans here that will love to have your concerts here.
thank you for the wonderful eve in Bern and for all those inspiring jazz albums. i wish many many more jazzing years with good health!!!!!!!!
peace and love

More on Fripp's soundscapes and Pat Martino: That was an interesting note about Ian McDonald and Pat Martino. I wonder why they haven't worked together in some way? Yes, I know Ian McDonald was a founding member of KC and wrote most of the tunes on that incredible 1st album. I've had some correspondence with Ian myself that started out with a question about the chord sequence in "Blue in Green" that a friend of his (Andrew Keeling) passed on to him. Ian revealed in further correspondence that his contribution to that 1st album was influenced by Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch!" album (listen to the vibes on Moonchild - Bobby Hutcherson is present in Ian's playing).
I do think Pat's improvisations over Fripp's soundscapes could be something very special. Pat has a demonstrated interesting in digital technology with visual art. I'm personally very wary of bytes and bits in making music - and all musicians should be I think - but soundscapes are something altogether different. It relies heavily on electronic processors but the human element is still very much present in the music that is played. Pat, consider it please?

Hi Pat. I see King Crimson will be in Philadelphia in August. Just wondering whether you might attend. I’ve been listening to both you and Robert Fripp for many years and hear a lot of similarities, especially with respect to that right hand. I know you’ve expressed some enthusiasm for rock players, specifically Pete Townsend. Have you ever considered a project with Robert Fripp and his soundscapes? I think it would be heavenly. .

Pat,
The last time I had seen you was at "the Cellar-Door" in Washington DC when you were playing with the Joyous-Lake Band... January 1976 was it? Two gigs in two nights I've never forgotten! Memories of great events sure do carry!
Recently saw your performance in Amsterdam - no words can describe the beauty of the music and the intensity of the spiritual experience it generated within me.
A duet with your pianist Rick Germanson as an interlude just ahead of "The Visit" was simply amazing and its mood reminded me somewhat of the "We'll be together again" album. My hope is that, someday, you'll be able to bring out a new album containing some of your most current compositions and arrangements with today's lineup.
Thank you for having come to Amsterdam and may God's blessings forever shower upon you and allow you to continue on.
Peace and Love,
Alix

Yes. Pat's playing with Eric Kloss is fantastic. His work on "Introducing Eric Kloss" is killer. Too bad they didn't let him stretch out more on those LPs. I'm really in to "Bar Wars" with Willis Jackson. It's late 1970s so Pat's sound and soloing style is much like his LPs as a leader of that era. And he is given a lot of space to solo with Willis Jackson. Great stuff.

Save our planet, it's the only one with Pat Martino's music.

Since you asked, my vote for Pat's best sideman recording is Don Patterson's "Boppin and Burning" recorded feb 1968. The group plays Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" and "Now's the Time" and Monk's "Epistrophy" and a couple of other tunes. The band is smokin and Pat's comping and soloing is just fabulous.

Pat-
Thank you so much for an incredible show last week at the Blues Alley. Your playing was perfect and the tightness of the band was exceptional. I hope you enjoyed my promotional CD and the lead sheets I gave you.
Please note on my CD, there is a tune titled, A Call for Peace; I hope you can give that piece an extra listen and if you like it I can send the lead sheet for it.
Thanks again,

Dear Brian, it’s wonderful to hear from you. Thanks for the description you’ve shared. I hope that you’re aware of some of the events that have altered my state of consciousness, and within them, (to some degree) the lack of retainment. But there are exceptions, when certain names are mentioned. It’s wonderful to recall, (in flash back) the appreciation of someone’s presence. That’s what I feel about your dad. Please correct me if I’m wrong, (sometimes it’s difficult for me to remember details) I vaguely remember a time in my late teens, or early 20’s when I spent time with a number of very special individuals whenever I performed in Buffalo, NY., or possibly in Seattle, WA? In either case Bob Pennington was very special to me. It also brings back memories of a Music Store, where we use to meet. Nonetheless, thanks for being in touch, I hope we come in contact again ..... My warmest regards!

Greetings Mr. Martino. My dad was a cat named Bob Pennington. I'm not sure if you remember him but as a child growing up he spoke of you quite often. He and his second wife Maryland told me they new you and spoke very highly of you. It's been about 13 years since my Dad past on but I'm curious to know more about him. He was a major fan of yours and made sure I listened to you. I was the only teenager I knew growing up that had Van Halen and Pat Martino records and my friends thought I was weird.
You may have known that he used to transcribe your work and I was told it was very accurate.
I'm sure you are very busy but I thought I would drop you a line to see if you remembered my Dad.
Kind regards,
Brian Pennington

I really enjoyed meeting you and Aya at the May 3 master class in Washington. I thought you explained your method clearly and concisely and it was really quite inspiring. Thank you both for giving us your time. I could not make it to Blues Alley, but I hope to see you again in concert sometime soon. By the way, any chance you could post the melody you derived from the solar constellation? That was fascinating.

I attended Pat's May 3 master class here in D.C. and it was a great and enlightening experience. I especially like Pat's approach to music. Just visualizing the chromatic scale in a circular, as opposed to linear, fashion has helped bring things into greater clarity. Most of all, I appreciate Pat's openness to all questions and his thoughtful and articulate responses. It was a great way to spend the afternoon and I highly recommend it to all guitarists as well as those who want to learn how a true artist approaches his craft.

We've talked several times. On one occasion we were talking about the album "the return". You wondered why that was the album I really wanted to learn the guitar parts for. Well now I see why you wondered. I have just discovered the wealth of music you recorded with Don Patterson. Now that is my favorite. As I have told you in the past, I love it when you play with a Hammond in the band. Are you going to record anything with Tony Monaco? Another live album would be great. Are you and Tony playing anywhere in the U.S.? We miss you in California.

Hi Pat,
I just want to tell you how great it was to see you play in Bern in such a great ambiance and small setting.I'm the guy that's half-Swiss and who grew up in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. I live for jazz, it's really a passion for me... Meeting you was really an honor to me and I really got the impression that you are a really nice and humble guy. When I watched you play it was just amazing... I can't even find the words, it's incredible. The other musicians that accompanied you were also excellent. Anyway, it's funny what I read by the guy who says you taught him about a handshake because the first thing that struck me was your good grip honest handshake.
Please come back soon and play in Switzerland because myself and others here love your music!!!!

Hi Pat. You are a great person and full of God, if that is fair to say. Many years ago I paid to take a couple lessons from you in your home in Philly. It was around 1985 and I was 15. My uncle paid for the lesson. They did not go far because we really didnt have the money. I had a long rocker hair cut. Anyway, you really inspired me. Forget about us talking guitar, you taught me how to shake someones hand. You did. Now that was a precious lesson in life and I am 38 now. I remember everytime I shake someones hand and how important it is. You did that for me and I thank you for it. You are a very special and a very bright man.
I do hope you find bliss and happiness in life.
My favorite thing I ever heard you play was "Footprints". It reminds me of a walk in the city park on a fall day with the smell of earthy leaves and cool air on your face. I love it and its a warm in-the-now feeling.

Dear Mr Martino,
Thanks for the asnwers,
I've chosen to share my response on the Guest Book beacuse my account couldn't replay successfully at your email address..I don't know why. But it's not a problem it goes well on the guestbook.
So, yeas, my second question is not properly correct..sorry again for my "Italo-inglese" vocabulary!! Aniway you've given me the answer I deserved.. :)
What you say is really interest for my work because one of the idea I'll want to point is the importance of instinct and emotional interpretation in music expression. And sure, the theory is essential but maybe after this or with the same peso. As you, many great jazz musician started to play ( like Wes too!) self teaching..isn' it ?!
For the moment really thanks..I'll write you soon.
With admiration,
Marco

Dear Marco,
Since you've chosen to share your response, as well as your questions public-ally I'll join with you here in the Guest Book in the same way.
So, let's begin:
Your Questions:
1. Why did you decide to write this book, and when? The year of publication is 1983, but when did you really write it?
2. "I think you have always been an avantgard artist an in L.E also you started a new kind of approch on guitar. Don't you?"
3. Many see the method like a minor dorian conversion but you use aeolian minor fingerings on the forms (G minor or Bb Major). What is the right interpretation?
I've always seen the line forms in an expanded key of G minor in the sense that I can use line forms like minor dorian, aeolian, melodic minor etc., it depends on the context we are using it. Is that right?
Answers:
1. An original decision to share my enjoyment was activated by an interest from others. When musicians began to ask questions about my playing it became essential for me to find ways that would successfully translate my descriptions into a mutual tool. That's when, and why I began to study the musical communities language.
Since I've always been self taught, the true source of my conclusion was, and still is based upon intuitive logic. I began to collect those writings in the early 60's, and have continued to this day in my ongoing journal.
2. Marco, I'm sorry but I don't quite understand your second question. But as far as being .avant-garde" in starting a new approach for learning the instrument, in my opinion the current approach is even more abstract.
3. As to a realistic interpretation, I have to point your attention to the fact that I rarely give any thought to scales, or any of their modal forms, (due to the fact that I've never studied in those directions). All of my improvisations have come directly from personally effective melodies, (as well as editing them for approximately 50 years). Of coarse their are certain forms that some instructors refer to as .scaleable, or modal frameworks" but that's a conclusion based upon their perspectives of the individual, and can never be trusted when it comes to the true source of another's intentions.
Marco, for now I send you my warmest regards,
Pat Martino

Dear Mr Martino,
I’ m really excited for your answer and for your affection in my work. I’ve read many articles on you, and every time there was written you are a really nice and friendly person. Now I’m shore about it!!
My work is based mainly to illustrate your personal lenguage in music, in jazz. Starting with some biogarfy pages of your life and your career. Then I'd like to concetrate on show your idea of " minor conversion" that you explane on Linear Expressions, and then to show your lenguage as an avantgard lenguage, since the early years to nowadays. So I 'd like to ask you something about Linear Expressions.
1. Why did you diceded to write this book? and when ? The year of publication is 1983, but when did you really write it??
2. I think you have allways been an avantgard artist an in L.E also you started a new kind of approch on guitar. Don't you ?
3. Many see the method like a minor dorian conversion but you use an eolian minor fingerings on the forms (G minor or Bb Major ). What is the right interpretation?
I've always seen the line forms in a expanded key of G minor in the sense that I can use the line forms like a minor dorian, eolian , melodic minor etc., it depends on the contecxt we are using it. Is it right?
So this is a part of my quiestions that maybe seems to be a little commonplace, but it is really useful in my work.
Sorry for my english. The last time one of my english teachers help me to write you, but not this time :)
Thanks a lot and I'll look forward to hearing from you again.
With admiration,
Marco

I found your essay 'the nature of guitar' to be the single most interesting written piece of guitar instruction I have ever read. The idea of piano notation as being 'conversationally' convenient for musicians but theoretically inappropriate for guitar because it fails to incorporate the up-down axis is very true. The alternative you offer is very clean and straightforward, with nice mathematics as any great scientist will present their case. I'm very glad I stumbled across this page today.

Dear Mr Martino,
My name is Marco Mastrantonio, and I live in Rome.
First of all, I would like to express my deepest admiration for your outstanding artistic talent, for your human qualities, and for your fantastic works. I've been listening to your music for many, many years.
I am a guitarist as well, and I have been strongly influenced by your outstanding style.I am also a student at the university of Rome "Tor Vergata" and I study music. In the past few months I've had the chance of deepening and widening my knowledge of your works, since I'm currently writing my final dissertation on you and your "minor conversion" method in Linear Expression. I previously discussed my choice with Prof. Adamo(ethnomusicology), my supervisor, and with Prof. Polese, my second supervisor, who deals with blues, jazz, rock music in my university. Obviously, they were enthusiast of my project and therefore, here I am!
I'm scheduled to defend my dissertation in May and I thought my work would not be complete unless I tried to contact you and ask you your opinion about it. I am truly delighted and honoured to have the chance of letting other university students and colleagues know more about you, your life, your remarkable work. You've been a reference point in every jazz course I've had the possibility to attend in Rome. There are many questions I would like to ask you.... therefore...I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience!
With admiration

I saw a few days ago that you were coming to Seattle's Jazz Alley in April, but now I don't see it listed on their or your posted itinerary. Is that still on or has cruel fate once more delivered a swift headbutt to Your Willing Thrall?

Thanks for your terrific example of courage in the face of adversity. All the best with warm regards, Keith

Dear Pat, just bought El Hombre.....in 2008....even though I'm 26 and new to jazz I've come up with a way to learn the guitar. Listen to the pros. I've transcribed the second tune on El Hombre....now it's off to transcribe some others. I do have questions, but I don't know how'd I'd get them answered?
Great Work!

Hello Pat,
Please let me thank you for your beautiful music, I wish you come present it in Prague, CZE sometimes...
Well if it do not bother you, could I ask you a question? Let me explain. I have studied classical piano for several years and then I dropped it and picked up a guitar after some years of being without music (a thing I do not want to do again). But till I discovered your theory it seemed to me that I thought about a guitar a lot like about a piano, through addition.
Well, I got recently into your "Nature of guitar" and also the published article in Guitar Player Magazine, which both have helped me a lot, but since I am a not professional musician or have any teacher sometimes it is hard for me to understand, even I do know the basics of a chord theory and a a minor pentatonic (on guitar). Can you please give me any advice on how to approach your theory with the practice? Should I start by learning the fretboard through the aug and dim chords and then apply it for songs and with a practice to apply it to the scales? I understood that more than scales you use melodic motives but still how should I approach the chords with that? Just to visualise the chord tones in any kind of fretboard? i know my question is probably to difficult to answer in email so please if you can recommend me any of your books only I would really appreciated it.
If I am in US I would sincerely ask you to give me a lesson if you are interested but as I am in Europe it is hard, still with an email I would be really out of my mind (as probably other thousands here)if you share some of your thoughts with me!
In the end, please let me thank you for you being such beautiful person sharing your wisdom with us here I think your music deeply reflects your personality and that why it is so loved. Have a nice day,

Pat, hope you are doing well. We spoke at Yoshi's in Oakland, Ca a couple ago. Are you still working on a Pat Martino Epiphone electric? I can't get enough of your music!!!!!!! You and your music are the reason that I took up the electric guitar. Hope to see you soon in the Bay Area as you have a lot more new fans (happens everytime I play your tunes)!!!! Dear Mr.Martino, it's Raymond, the biotechnologist, haha, hope you still remember. I was one of the Indonesian guys who just had a wonderful conversation about music as life with you at the Sultan in Jakarta after the Java Jazz Festival, the enjoyment of the moment remember? What a great thinker you are! I'd have to repeat it one more time, and really from the heart..It's has been an honor being able to sit one table with you and have that deep chat.
If you have a moment I would like to ask more about the opportunity for my brother to learn from you.. He is still in Berklee right now and he's gonna graduate in May.. From the way you look at life,I'm positively certain that you would be the ultimate teacher for him..I'd bet he'd be real excited..thank you Mr.Martino, looking forward to hearing from you again!

hi Pat,
Just saw your set at Java Jazz in Jakarta - Marc Antoine and I sat in the front row and couldn't stop smiling.
I had the honor to open for you in 1978 at the Cellar Door (with Tim Eyermann and East Coast Offering) and to think it was 30 years ago is crazy. Before then, Gil would tell me stories about your musical explorations in his matter of fact way and I, being 21, looked and listened to Joyous Lake and We'll be Together Again with awe. Many people have since told me that the duo record is their favorite. ...a nice contrast.
Even though I'm a keyboard player, I need to get into your transcriptions and learn more stuff from you......I can't wait to see the film.
Thanks again for the inspiration. It really goes around.

I and my wife came to see the 2nd stage at Cotton Club on the 3rd of March. We enjoyed very much.
It is the first time to see you play in front of me although I have been a big fan of you for decades.
And one more thing I felt happy was that you treated every single fan very gently, with talking each other, shaking hands, and giving your signature onto CD jackets and guitars.
Off course, I was a one of the fans at the table. (I asked if how your wife was. Sorry to hear she did not come to Japan with you.)
You are going to Indonesia after Japan. I hope you show COOL play in Jakarta.

Hi Pat,
Long time fan. I see you anytime you are within a 150 mile radius. I've loved every concert I've attended, particularly the session with David Kikoski at the University of Maryland Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center a few years ago. You really should tour with him on piano sometime again if possible. Rick Germanson is also fantastic, but Dave really had me going that night.
My question is as follows, and I would really love to hear from you on this one:
How do you feel about concert tapers? I love your shows and would love to be able to pull some of your amazing shows into my hi-res (24-bit, 96K) recorder for permanent, lossless archiving, but I've never seen a clear stance from you or your management on how you feel about this. I feel that society as a whole will be in a most unfortunate position once you stop touring, and I would love be a part of the continuation of your legacy by recording and sharing (always for free, never selling) your live music. Of course, any shows that you decide to make commercially available would be immediately taken out of circulation.
Are you opposed to this? Most concert tapers are very respectful and would never impose on another concert attendees experience (i.e. mic stand blocking views). I would love to be able to tell my kids kids about the great Pat Martino and have the concert archive to let them here just what an amazing talent you are.
Thanks so much for you reply.

Dear Pat,
Just a word of thanks for your music and your dedication in chasing your muse. I have several of your albums, the favorite of which is "Live at Yoshi's" It's in my all time top ten list.At the risk of sounding like a stalker, several years ago I went out for lunch at a South Philly place named Nick's Cafe (my uncle and mother grew up in North Philly)We went up to the bar to find a menu or a waitress. I noticed two or three pictures of you over the bar and asked the man there if he liked your music. He looked at me and said,"You just missed him!"When the waitress came out to take our order she asked if I was the person that asked about you. I told her yes. She then had a lot of good things to say about you and your parents. A great memory for me, and the lunch was excellent as well. I am working my way through some stuff that was in a Guitar Player interview with Jude Gold (saw him last year at Scullers in Cambridge, Ma.)I'm enjoying it and may also tackle some other stuff in the future. I hope this letter finds you in good health. If you can, try to get up to Boston sometime or (dare I hope) to Maine as I'd love to hear you live. Take care and God Bless You.
Sincerely,

Hi Pat, I would just like to tell you that you and wes montgomery are my favourite guitarists! I am aspiring to be a professional musician, and you are one of my top influences, you are truly great! Anyway, I would love it if you answered this question for me.. I have been through and tried different approaches to picking, economy picking, alternative picking... attempted rest stroke picking but it is very unnatural to me.. Which style of picking do you use? Anyway, thanks for the great music and the major impact you have cause on my playing!

Pat, Happy Belated Birthday! I've been an amazed fan since the 70's when I enjoyed your incredible speed and impeccible ability to express nuanced sentiment at warp! I was in the Lighthouse in Santa Monica when management's deficient integrity reached the threshold requiring exposure and comment from the bandstand. Your playing was furious but harnessed and perfect! Your recovery is such an awesome act of God's grace and your indomitable spirit. Thank you for your tenacious perseverence. Thank You, Pat, for making me a better guitarist. I am a rock-n-roll guitarist and last fall, I literally locked myself in a room for weeks and studied your musical styles and textures. All of my rock students wondered why I had gotten so wrapped up in jazz all of the sudden. I'm pleased to say that I've finally gotten over my obsession with learning all your solos. It wasn't as bad, however, as that Wes Montgomery phase I went through 2 years ago when I actually stopped eating and lost 20 pounds.

Dear Pat. On the weekend i listened to "Live at Yoshi's" and "Joyous Lake" (and totally dug EVERY note on them). Apart from the superlative playing, I find it enormously inspiring that the same artist is responsible for both of them! Beyond scales, beyond speed, beyond "jazz" is that universality of music, or ART, that we all ultimately strive for but very very few attain. What can i say but thank you.

Dear Franco, .... It’s a pleasure to hear from you. To answer your questions let me begin by bringing your attention to my guitar. It isn’t a Les Paul, it’s a Pat Martino model I designed for Gibson approximately seven years ago. As to amplification, I’ve been using a power unit designed by Acoustic Image. I’ve been using two different models, (which are similar) the “Clarus”, and the “Focus”. Regarding effects, I use “Concert Hall” Reverb. The speaker systems requested, (contract rider) and used in performance are made by Mesa Boogie. I send you my best wishes!

Dear Great Pat, i'm a italian passionate guitarist (not professional but fine, i've been playing for 30 years). You are my "top benchmark" in guitar jazz style,
I love particularly you "geometrical" vision in solo phrases and improvisation. Particularl your feeling, intention and pronunciation of your stile. I love the sound you can create: I love the "dark" and "smooth" sound in your solo guitar: I know the Gibson Les Paul Signature you are using nowadays (I use a hand made archtop) But a question for you: what is your guitar amplifier? Do you use effects ? I'll be happy and honoured if you could send me a mail. And when you'll be back in Milan I'll be to listen you.
Thank a lot really.

Wow, I haven't visited this site in over a year now. I just now reflected on the first time I heard you back in 76 at the jazz workshop in Boston.
We talked briefly after your performance while you drank a Heineken and smoked a Pall Mall. I remember you were wearing a purple turtleneck and playing a Koontz guitar. I also remember how superb you played. Hoping to be able to come to Birdland with my girlfriend to hear you on January ninth which is my birthday.

Gee, I grew up near Sellersville and thought if I moved to New York I would see more jazz. Now the greats are playing Sellersville. Can someone point me to a place that explains the emergence of so many great Italian-American jazz guitarists from South Philly over a two generation time period. Is this all Joe Sgro's doing? It fascinates me. Have a great 2008 and keep playing PA!

Dear Pat:
This is to wish you a Merry merry and a Happy happy. Been a fan for years. This info might be interesting for you, family, friends, neighbours, etc.
There's a company called Omnilife that has a record of 100.000 testimonies of the goodness of its products. They're on a crusade to restore health to humanity at large. I'm sure, guaranteed, that we could've saved Mike Brecker of his maladies. If you know any musician or, hell, anybody that suffers from anything, let me know or give that person my mail and have him get in touch. garondon@cable.net.co
This is no prank or fairy tale, is the real deal.
Your music has been an inspiration all these years for me and my students at the University El Bosque, Bogota, Colombia, where I teach as an Associated professor.
I'd be honored if you visit my page: myspace.com/gabrielrondon
Take care
Gabe

Hey Pat,
Glad to see you are up to some more great things (from your website info).
I last saw you performing at a club in Cambridge, MA in 2004. It was an amazing performance and most of it featured original tunes I have never heard before and that are not documented on any of your recordings that I am aware of. I hope you continue to perform your own material, as you are an amazing composer and some of the standards get really worn out over time - and it seems like there is less and less new exciting tunes out there. Will you record these anytime soon?
A somewhat related question: Any chance of doing an official bootleg recording that is downloadable like some of the other artists are doing these days?
Keep up the great work!!!!
John R. from upstate NY, then Austin, TX, now in ABQ, NM.
P.S. I tried to use the Bulletin Board at AAJ, but it did not seem to work.
Thanks.

Please release some old live shows from the Joyous Lake era.
(there must be some old board tapes lying around somewhere!)
Have you thought about issuing a series of live performances via your website?
It would be welcomed by your fans. Thank you!

I just saw that Creative Force is now available on DVD. WOW!!!
I have seen a lot of people having trouble finding the old VHS of this and it will be great to be able to jump chapters and loop sections.
I can't wait to see you come out to California again. Any plans on coming here?

Hello Pat, I met you at you house one evening way back in 1986 - a friend of mine - Glenn - a bass player - was taking lessons from you at the time. I have to say that meeting you has influenced my life in ways that are still unfolding; All Sides, All Ways. I am a drummer, and love your music. I just bought tickets to see you in Sellersville, PA on Feb 2. See you then!

Dear Pat,
My interest in the guitar started waning after playing 20 years until I recently started listening to you. I went out and bought the closest thing I could find to your signature model (couldn't find the actual one) and am back on board for life, I think. Please come do a show in Barcelona at your earliest convenience.

I was in audience during your birthday celebration concert w/ Eric Alexander Friday night at Chris' Jazz Cafe & took a number of snapshots (I was not one of the people using flash, since stage was well-lighted). Will be happy to email you high-resolution jpgs or snail-mail you a CD of whole series. Cannot find an email address for you on your website. If you will share with me your email address, I'll send samples (I'm jazz fan, record collector & amateur photog). Best, John Herr

Hi Pat, it was good talking to you today. I'm afraid I'll have to wait until
you're in town again to visit. After our conversation I found out that Friday
wasn't going to work for Andrea. I apologize for the confusion and hope you get
this message in time, in case Andrea doesn't reach you first.
I'll keep track of your schedule and the next time you're in Philly I'll be
out to see you with one of my daughters.
Again it was great to talk to you today and I hope your holidays (if I don't see
you first) are blessed for you and your lovely wife.
Love, Your cousin,
Angela

Dear Pat, many years ago my parents took me to visit your parents in Phila. they were friends for many years. You were home and played for me an arrangement with Gregorian Chant being sung in the background. My parents Mary and James Falcone, mom's maiden name Contino. In the late 80's I was Chairman of the Music Education dept. at Combs College of Music, Phila. I have a Doctor's degree in composition from the College and compose with Gregorian Chant as themes for my compositions. Many on my organ works have been performed extensively. I find your works fascinating and would like to send you a CD of my doctoral recital........ I taught at St. John Neumann High School for about 12 years........take care

Hi Pat,
You may remember me and my wife Ling (her caligraphy is featured in the Galleries section of this webpage). We're living in New York City now! Just wanted to let you know that we think about you often and are so grateful for your music and generosity. You are an inspiration.
I'm going to be running in the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday (Nov. 18th). If only I could run as fast as you play guitar! Until next time,
Yours truly,
David

Greetings Pat. I had the pleasure of seeing you over the weekend at Dizzy's Jazz Club with the Eric Alexander Quartet with a friend of mine. I wanted to thank you for making the evening such an enjoyable one especially when you came up to talk to us after your set. You guys sounded great and the copy of "El Hombre" that you signed for me is something that I will treasure forever. Sometimes your heroes can let you down and that certainly wasn't the case on Saturday. Keep up the great work and please come back to New York or New Jersey soon.

I'm a heavy rock guitarist for the last 25 years. I do alot of bangin and I founded the "Heart of Rock-n-Roll" institute of music here in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For the last 6 months I've sort of withdrawn into myself and done nothing but study Pat Martino and all his various styles. People are worried about me as I'm now locked in a practice room for hours on end by myself. My students get more and more frustrated everyday because of my indifference to their needs as heavy rockers. I need to stop this. Someone help me. I'm obsessed with Martino's styles and riffs. This has to stop.

Good job you guys!
Are you going to play in Japan soon?
I think you should play with Tim Harada, he's a good musician in Japan now. He does many styles I think, but now he's doing pops only maybe!?!
